ATF gets pushed out past the fill cap when the engine is started cold. There is no assist for a few minutes but after that everything becomes normal, with full assist and no overflow. It only does it occasionally, perhaps once a week. The fluid level in the reservoir is where it should be, between the Hot and Cold marks. I think the fluid aerates and some fluid spills out. I flushed out the old fluid and refilled with fresh fluid but it did not help. I have not changed the filter out yet, the one that fits on to the end of the return hose. Haven't had a chance yet to check out the suction hose to the pump. New pump is $1380 Cdn, so I do not want to try out a new pump on a guess. [ Edited Sun Apr 15 2018, 04:48PM ]

The plastic power steering reservoir had a crack at the bottom, where the suction hose nipple is. Fluid was not leaking out but cold viscous fluid being sucked into the pump in large volumes was enough to create suction at the suction nipple and draw ambient air in. What I had not realised previously was the high volume of fluid that the steering pump pumps through the steering system. The suction hose is 1 inch ID and every bit of it is needed to cope with the high flow.
