According to what information we have gotten from Ftl on that day the tractor needs to sense a signal from the trailer abs system to allow the tractor protection valve to open all the way.

That can't be correct. That means a Cascadia is not capable of pulling a non-ABS trailer? I work for a large carrier with Cascadias and old non-ABS trailers still in the fleet. Not to mention all the trailers with ABS systems disconnected or with malfunctions.

The last I knew, the only link between tractor and trailer ABS systems was for diagnostics (dash indicator) not brake performance.

Only partially true, Larry. A trailer ABS system receives its operating voltage thru the center pin on the 7-pin socket. Also, guys & gals, keep in mind that most of the "black" trailer power cords that some drivers & fleets buy for their units are not heavy enough wire to support a 30A load on them constantly. If I see a unit with ABS on both trk & trlr & a non-ABS("green" or "red" power cords) and they come in with ABS problems, that is the first thing I check is the continuity thru the power cord center pin. 99/100 times there is no continuity thru that wire due to overloading. But when I install the correct power cord and put an ammeter inline thru that circuit, lo and behold!! that ABs system starts working properly and no active faults in the system.
