Is it just me or is there an unseemingly high amount of "road gators" out on the interstates and highways lately? ALso, I have been seeing a high amount of tread separation on tires of customer equipment coming into the shop. Are they really making recap tires that poorly or what? I almost hit one thursday night on my way home from Lincoln, NE, with my lil Toyota RAV4!!

Anything worth doing is worth doing well!!

I wouldn't say that recaps have a higher failure rate than virgin tires. When we get a failed tire back to the shop that consists of more than two sidewalls, we can usually find the failure cause. It is usuall human induced such as bad repair or mounting. I would say that 98% of our problems are caused by run-flat problems

Ever since Bridgestone did away with their oncor recaps. I have had more bandag tires come back into the shop at TA in the last two months, then i have ever done for oncor in a ten year period. I now try to sell a driver a new tire or even a used tire instead of the recap. Stressing the fact that im am saving him time, money, and the wait on a bridgestone rep to make sure that tire was infact bad.Which im sure most TA's only see the rep about every three to four months.

depends on who cap the tire if it is a major tire company like bridgestone michilin
goodyear and so on...they are not that bad...bandag recaps are not that bad of
recap. it is the tires that people cap in there garage and smaller capping companies
that cap junk casings and casings that are 10yrs old that leave gators on the road
also depends application of tire...oversized and heavy haulers should not use
caps period.

i personally belive alot of the tire faluires are due to poor upkeep on the tires. not putting them down or anything this is just what i noticed is that bigger company drivers just dont care due to its not there equitment. they just hook up and start driving they dont pay attention to the air pressure tread of the tire or condition of it. some drivers are relly good and some are not good at all with it. the ones that are not very good with there pre trip. if the drivers paid a little more attention it would save the companies alot of money in tires and fuel. like i said before not putting anybody down just what i have noticed.

Many carriers have good tire maintainence programs, and bad pre-trip enforcement. The first saves dollars and the second costs dollars.
